Hi there and welcome to my first blog for Total Physiotherapy (TP).
Our mantra at TP is “quality movement for body and mind” something that we are passionate about.
After our second child Marcus came into the world 8 weeks ago life has been, once again, shall we say…quite challenging.
Now we all like a challenge, and this brings me to my first blog. A new venture for me but one I hope you can enjoy reading as much as I think I will enjoy writing.
Both my beautiful boys were born by C-section. However, this does not stop the fact that my pelvic floor, transversus and multifidus – AKA my core muscles have been given a bit of a battering!!!
So those core muscles that everyone goes on about these days are important, but actually they work with our whole body set up. There really is no use in trying to improve our core after pregnancy and birth or indeed try and maintain good core control during pregnancy if our posture is not good. We have good evidence that states our core muscles work best in a neutral pelvis position. So I encourage you all to check out this small video clip to see what is neutral and how to achieve it.
Ok so we now know that we need to keep our headlights pointing forward….(if you don’t know what I’m on about ….watch the video clip again!!!) but there is more to it than that. Once we have achieved a good pelvic posture we can start to look at how our core muscles affect the rest of how we move. Once we can activate our core muscles more efficiently, everything becomes more efficient.
So, getting more from your daily workout – whether that is managing two under twos (!!) or doing a regular gym session with Kate from Rush To It - Personal Training (021 775 691) – becomes easier too.

Our bodies change as we (as mothers) produce these most wonderful creations, but that should be no reason why not to embrace the changes and ensure we get the best from our bodies and keep our minds in a positive and energised place. Take a daily walk, unload the washing machine, change multiple nappies a day…but do it with your head lights pointing forward and your brain aware of your newfound quality of life!!!
